Helping us through a hard time  Smokey has fit right in as if sent by Skitty to help us all get through our loss The day after Thanksgiving, our 14-year-old, formally feral male cat named Skitty passed due to lung failure. We miss that loveable 15-pound cat terribly, as did our 15-year-old male cat, Spaulding. Spaulding would wander around looking for Skitty so we knew we had to find him comfort. We needed it, too. On December 19, 2014, we visited the PetSmart on 72nd Street, knowing they had kittens available from the NHS. We found a litter of 6 males, 10 weeks old. The little guy that got up to meet us was perfect. Gray in color and so friendly. We hadn't had a gray cat before. His name was Prince, and he wanted to go home with us. We adopted him and on the trip home we decided to name him Smokey. No particular reason other than his color. Upon arriving home, we read the instructions on how to introduce Smokey and Spaulding. It sounded pretty far out, and with Spaulding having had a roommate, we introduced them in about an hour. They took to each other immediately. They both checked each other out and it has been amazing to see how well they got along. No hissing, growling or any of that at all. Spaulding is totally at ease with his new buddy, having missed Skitty. They lay together frequently, as the pictures show. Smokey is a live-wire kitten for sure, but Spaulding takes it in stride. We will always miss Skitty as he was very special, but Smokey has fit right in as if sent by Skitty to help us all get through our loss. |
