Our Three-Legged Love

On New Year's Eve 2013, this young kitten was brought to NHS underweight, scared, and with an improperly healed back left leg. The medical staff amputated her injured leg and she was available for adoption 2 weeks later. She is our beloved miracle kitty!

I adopted Mabel (née Amber) on Tuesday, January 21, 2014, two weeks after the amputation of her back left leg. I saw her picture on the Nebraska Humane Society (NHS) Facebook page five days earlier and instantly fell in love with her! I checked the Adoptable Cats section of the NHS website several times over the next few days. When I saw she was still available on that Tuesday, I went to NHS to visit her. We locked eyes from behind the glass and when I met her face-to-face, I knew I wanted her to be part of our family! When I brought her home, I was amazed how quickly she gained strength and confidence. After a few days, Mabel and our elder kitty Kenny began to tolerate each other. All the playing and chasing strengthened her back leg and now, a few months later, she can outrun anybody! She loves to lounge in boxes, play with ice cubes and empty toilet paper rolls, and frolic with Kenny. She is adventurous, independent, and loving. My husband and I are eternally grateful to the Nebraska Humane Society staff, volunteers, and donors for saving our sweet girl!
