One Day at a Time Sasha is a beautifully fast runner, a Michael Phelps-esque swimmer, and a tennis ball fetching extraordinaire! I adopted Sasha (formerly Molly) when she was a year old from NHS in September 2011. She was rescued by NHS from a nearby shelter when "her time was up". There weren't many dogs available for adoption that day and I certainly didn't foresee myself taking home a little black dog, but there she was, sitting politely in her kennel with her adorably mutt floppy ears. She was my first dog on my own as an adult. Our first year together was rough to put it lightly. It was obvious very early on that she had been abused and aside from being potty trained, she didn't have an ounce of training. She was also a runner...an open-the-front-door-on-her-own-and-she's-gone runner. She even broke out of the dog park a few times and was running amok in the parking lot. I had obviously jumped into dog parenting way over my head. I had my at-wits-end days when I thought about turning her back in to the shelter. However, entertaining the thought of her ending up back in an abusive situation because I had given up on her was just too much for this dog lover to bear. So I took life with Sasha one day at a time. Then one day, she decided that she loved me and trusted me and it's been wonderful ever since! Sasha is a beautifully fast runner, a Michael Phelps-esque swimmer, and a tennis ball fetching extraordinaire! She has so much capacity for love, devotion, and affection. Now with that first year of turmoil as a distant memory, I can't imagine my life without her. It breaks my heart to think of how scary and tragic her first year of life must have been. Thank you, NHS, for reaching out to less fortunate shelters and giving my fur-baby a second chance at life! |
