Finding The Boof-meister

Two years ago in mid-November I went to NHS looking for a new best buddy.

I was really looking for a young adult dog as I didn't want the care and maintenance of a small puppy again. I had been to NHS several times in the preceding month with no luck. A week or so prior, NHS had featured a picture of a litter of 5 red puppies that were adorable but again, I really wasn't looking for a puppy and all that it would entail (pun intended!) ... so on this trip, again I did not find the adult dog of my dreams - HOWEVER there was one puppy left from the 5 basket litter of red pups I had seen on the NHS web site. One lone little face, sleeping on his little blue blanket. After looking at a couple of adult dogs I hesitantly said, "What about that little red dog? The puppy. What's his story?" They told me that he was, indeed, one of the 5 puppies featured the week before and he was the last one left (behind). The whole litter had been abandoned in Papillion, I found out to my shock and horror. I wanted to see him and of course, when I did, fell in love.
On the ride home with him sleeping in my lap, I named him Buford. With his slightly wrinkled face he reminded me of the old coon dog from the Beverly Hillbillys and I wanted him to have a "wrinkly" coon dog name. Sometimes he is lovingly referred to as Buford Button but mostly in his slightly devilish state, he is The Boof-meister.
He has been, from day one, the sweetest, kindest, most warm-hearted dog I have ever owned. I tell people he has a heart exactly like his eyes - made of gold. Just two months prior to adopting him I'd had to give up one of my dogs which broke my heart and The Boofster literally saved my soul.
Thank you NHS for your wonderful service and caring staff that brought us together!
