A Retirement Home for Miss Betty Davis My husband and I adopted Miss Betty Davis, an 11-year-old miniature pinscher, in October of 2011. Miss Betty was on daily medication for a chronic digestive problem and congestive heart failure, and although we loved her at first sight, we assumed that we were bringing her home to give her a comfortable, loving place to rest for a few months before she succumbed to her health issues. But after a whole lot of research and a little bit of collaboration with our veterinarian, we discovered that we could control her digestive condition almost entirely by altering her diet, which in turn gave her the ability to more effectively battle the congestive heart failure. We're happy to report that two years later, Miss Betty Davis is still going strong, walking more than a mile every day, and romping like a puppy with her two miniature pinscher brothers. She still takes a bit of medication for her stiff joints (she IS 13, after all!) and a few other assorted pills daily, but she's on a fraction of the medication that she was taking when she came to us, and she's a happy, healthy pup who loves to wear pretty clothes, roll in the grass, and give big, wet kisses. We're so grateful to the Nebraska Humane Society for introducing us to this very special little lady and giving us the opportunity to provide her with a comfortable retirement here's to several more years with our fancy girl with the fancy name. |
