Three of our four rescue dogs are adoptions from NHS. They all have their unique story to tell, but they make one incredible Dog Pack.

We first adopted Luke (top right) as a Special Needs placement from NHS with American Eskimo rescue in Feb 2009. We were supposed to transport him to Kansas City after having him simply spend the night with us as a foster family. He never did leave to go into Rescue, and has had a ball bossing around his Golden Retriever brother (and telling us when our Golden is about to have an epileptic seizure) ever since he got here. Luke was abused in his past, and was very skittish and scared when he was brought to NHS (which is why he went into Rescue) but he's slowly learning to trust new people, and loves nothing more than a good belly rub.
Penny (formerly known as Puffin - bottom left) was adopted in December 2010 - our little Christmas angel. She was completely shaved when we brought her home - the only way the NHS staff could pull all of the mats and weeds out of her fur after she'd been out running in the fields before she was brought into NHS as a stray. She is an absolute sweetheart, and is known as "The Pretty Pretty Princess." Since we brought her home, she's been diagnosed with Cushing's Disease, HypoThyroidism and also found to be Hard of Hearing - but now that her Cushing's is under control, she is thriving. And as you can see from the picture, she has a glorious coat to show off to anyone who is willing to pet her.
And then... there's Holly (center). We fostered Holly for NHS when they were jam-packed with dogs this past May. We weren't going to adopt her, only foster her until she recovered from her spay surgery, we said. Surely she'd do well with a family that knew how to handle an Alpha-wanna-be, we said... And here she is. Holly decided that she was absolutely attached to *her* Daddy, and adopted us. She's the smallest of the crew, but has the biggest attitude of the bunch. At the same time, she's a snuggler when she thinks no one is looking, and she is a wonderful romp-buddy for Luke.
We appreciate everything that NHS does - not only for the animals of our community, but also to educate kids (and adults). Luke, Penny, and Holly all thank everyone at NHS for giving them a second chance. They're healthy, happy, safe - and most importantly, they're loved.
